Our client is a worldwide, leading manufacturer of passenger information systems. All design and development, and the majority of production, is carried out at our clients head office near Brighton.

Brief summary

You will be mainly working within a small team developing new test equipment. You are likely to be working on several projects at any one time, with lifetimes of a few days to a number of months. You will be working on aspects of a project ranging from specifying requirements, through design and implementation. You may simultaneously have the role of technical lead on one project and development engineer on another.

You will report to the Electronics Manager of the R&D Department and/or a designated intermediary. You are likely to work with Project Managers, Software & Electronics Teams and Production staff as well as other departments. Occasional site visits, including overseas, are possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead existing hardware and software Production Test team resources on a day to day basis
  • Design and development of new test equipment as well as maintenance and repair of existing equipment.
  • Responsible for bringing new test equipment into the business and improving existing equipment to satisfy production requirements and meet agreed cost, quality & schedule targets
  • Enable all test equipment to be cost effectively maintained with high throughput, uptime and quality
  • Develop systems for collecting test data and ensure data is fit-for-purpose. Where appropriate, analyse and use data to improve efficiency and reliability of production and products
  • Produce documentation as required for peer review and future reference
  • Work productively with other staff in the mutual achievement of Company goals
  • Advise his or her manager of any improvements, conflicts of interest or inefficiencies pertaining to development activities

Background and skills

Essential

  • Degree/HND in Science, Electronics, Software or Engineering related subject
  • Pragmatic approach, can-do attitude
  • Experience in designing complex electromechanical systems and managing project progress
  • Experience of being technical lead and owning the technical direction of projects within a small team
  • Experience in turning around small projects in short timescales
  • Experience in collecting stakeholder expectations, generating minimal requirements and analysing architecture options
  • Good understanding of benefits and limitations of methodologies and tools including demonstrable use of at least two of the following; decision matrix, V-model, waterfall, DMAIC, TPM, WBS, project charter, risk register, 8D

Overall Purpose of the job:

Install, fit, test, assemble, commission, maintain and repair electro mechanical systems (for example, motors, gearboxes, pumps) and equipment and wiring in accordance with regulations and specifications. Carry out work to the satisfaction of the customer and the management team.

Responsibilities:
• Analyse job cards to determine job status, work authorizations/limitations, estimate, description of problems and / or expected serviceability.
• Test electro-mechanical equipment to troubleshoot known or suspected problems.
• Disassemble electro-mechanical equipment noting parts identification, configuration and condition.
• Replace or repair worn or defective mechanical assemblies.
• Requisition of replacement parts.
• Verify repairs using start-up testing procedures.
• Retest reassembled electro-mechanical equipment for proper output and operation.
• Operate specialized equipment.
• Complete required paperwork for each job accurately and on a timely basis.
• Follow all Company Health & Safety procedures and use proper personal protective equipment.

You will be technically responsible for projects to deliver new products, with technical ownership of the complete product.

Technical leadership of small multidisciplinary project team which will involve some technical contribution within own area of expertise.

Lead products through product lifecycle encompassing specification, feasibility, development, verification, certification and handover to volume manufacturing.

Essential skills and experience:

Background in one of the following disciplines, and familiarity with several others:
·Digital hardware design, analogue hardware design, RF design, FPGA or embedded software.
·Experience of working in a commercial Engineering research and development environment.
·Product development lifecycle experience; taking a product specification through design and development to the point of manufacture.
·High standard of technical documentation.

Preferable skills and experience:

Key Tasks

> Undertake maintenance, diagnosis, repair, trouble shooting and reconditioning activities on a range of machinery, maintaining all key services to Production
> Undertake inspection and testing at both sites
> Maintain and develop a computerised database for PPMs
> Develop ideas to improve PPM and customer interface
